Making a neck pillow is undoubtedly a worthwhile DIY project. It can be a perfect personalized gift that you may use for almost any occasion. To make a microwaveable neck pillow, you will most likely need the following: flax seed, a measuring cup, a mixing bowl and spoon, fabric, colored threads, ruler, scissors, flat iron, sewing machine, funnel, and essential oil (if desired).
- First and foremost, decide whether you want the pillow to be scented or unscented. If you like it scented, mix 25 drops of essential oil and two cups of flax seed in a mixing bowl. After that, allow it to dry.
- With the use of a ruler and fabric chalk, trace the actual measurements of the pillow into the fabric to ensure that you’ll cut the right size. (the size will depend on how big or small you want your pillow to be)
- Toward the other side of the fabric, fold a ½ inch along the raw edges to make all its sides look neat. Gently iron the fabric to flatten it.
- Fold the fabric in half crosswise (width-wise) with the right sides together before ironing it.
- Sew ½-seam allowance along the short edge and on the long-edge. This will leave only one open end. Flip the fabric inside out and iron it. By now, you should have a rectangular-shape casing with a short edge left open.
- With the help of a funnel, pour in the flax seed mixture into the casing until it is approximately 75% full.
- Seal the opening by using a ½-inch zigzag stitch to keep the seams closed. And voila! You have already made your very own microwaveable neck pillow.
To make it more personalized, you can embroider your name, or if you plan on giving it as a gift, you can place the name of the recipient on the pillowcase before filling it with flax seeds.
